EV Owner Guide
A practical guide to getting the most out of your electric car. Charging, range, costs, and more.
1. Charging Your EV
Type 2
AC · 7–22kW
UK standard for home & most public chargers. Always carry a cable.
CCS
DC · 50kW+
Rapid charging at motorway stops. Cable is tethered, no need to bring your own.
CHAdeMO
DC · 50kW
Older rapid standard, mainly on Nissan Leaf and some Japanese models.

Home Charging
A 7kW wall charger gives you a full charge overnight (8–12 hrs). Ask your energy supplier about EV tariffs. Cheaper overnight rates can cut your charging cost significantly.
Public Charging
Over 50,000 UK charge points. Check real-time availability with Zap-Map or Electroverse before you leave. Public chargers from 2023 must accept contactless. Older ones may need an app.

20–80%
daily sweet spot
Keep charge between 20% and 80% for everyday use to extend battery life. Only go to 100% before a long trip.

Useful tools
A Better Routeplanner
Plans routes with charging stops and shows arrival charge levels.
Octopus Electroverse
Route planner + single payment across thousands of UK charge points.
Zap-Map
UK's most comprehensive charging map with live availability.
ABC: Always Be Charging
Plug in whenever you can: at work, the supermarket, anywhere. Small top-ups add up and mean you'll never be caught short.
Regenerative Braking
Lifting off the accelerator feeds energy back into the battery. In one-pedal mode, you can slow almost to a stop without touching the brakes.
3. Running Costs
Electric
2–5p
per mile at home
Petrol / Diesel
15–20p
per mile in fuel
Most drivers save several hundred pounds a year just on fuel.
Road Tax (VED) for Electric Cars

Rates correct as of April 2025.
4. Practical Tips
Pre-Heat / Pre-Cool
Use your car's app to set the cabin temperature while it's still plugged in. Costs you nothing and means you start every journey comfortable.
EV Parking Bays
Supermarkets and retail parks often have EV bays with chargers near the entrance. Keep an eye out, a quick top-up while you shop is always worth it.
Apps to Get
Zap-Map, Octopus Electroverse, A Better Routeplanner, and your car's manufacturer app. Between these, you've got everything covered.
5. Battery Care
Daily charge range
Charge to 100% only for long journeys, not for everyday use.
Optimal Habits
Avoid sitting at 100% or running flat. The 20–80% habit genuinely extends battery life over time.
Extreme Temps
Pre-condition the car while it's plugged in during very hot or cold weather. It protects range and comfort.
6. Maintenance & Servicing
EV Specialist
Annual EV health check
High-voltage system work
Battery diagnostics
Electric motor & inverter
Any Garage
Tyres
Brake pads & discs
MOT testing
Windscreen wipers & bulbs
Still under warranty? Check your manufacturer's terms before using an independent garage. Some warranties require servicing within the dealer network.
7. Enjoy the Drive!
You're going to love it.
EVs are quieter, smoother, and more responsive than most people expect. Instant torque from standstill, a silent cabin, no stops at the petrol station. Once the first week is done, it's hard to imagine going back.
One-pedal driving
Remote climate control
Scheduled cheap-rate charging
